Cycle of Knowledge

What

Cycle of knowledge is a registered charity that brings the opportunity of a world-class digital education to people who live in hard-to-reach locations. We do this in a very unique and innovative way – blending old and new technologies that allow us to overcome the challenges usually faced in these remote areas.
We believe that education is a basic human right and our vision is to help deliver education to those people in the world who might otherwise not have access to learning. We are currently working towards making our highly innovative, groundbreaking solution available in northern Namibia and southern Angola.
In rural, poverty-stricken areas, a bicycle can be a lifeline. The humble bicycle remains the most efficient form of transport ever invented by humans; it is able to run without external energy and can even create electricity to be stored! We aim to use these lifelines at the core of our work.

WHY

In western countries access to education is freely available and providing your child with a good standard of education is a requirement by law. However, not everyone is as fortunate as young people here in the UK.
In sub-Saharan Africa, 30% of children drop out of school before completing a primary school education. In some countries, that figure is even higher. Can you imagine a third of primary school children from your local neighbourhood having to drop out of school to start earning a living?
Without a good level of education a person’s job prospects can be severely affected which will impact hugely on their earning potential and quality of life. Research has shown that children from families who have a historically low quality of education will find it hard to escape this cycle, going on to have families themselves where access to education is restricted. Cycle of Knowledge aims to help families break that cycle and provide a brighter future for themselves.

Donate

A little can go a long way in poverty stricken countries.
The cost of your regular cup of coffee would allow us to pay a local teacher’s wages for a day, a lunch at a fast food restaurant could contribute towards buying a bike for them to use, and the cost of a meal out with your family could allow us to buy a battery and learning space for a village to use.
We cannot help people without funding to do so. Please help us to create brighter futures for these people by making a donation here

WHY

In Angola, kids have to attend school (by law) between the ages of 7 and 11. Despite this, the UN believes that at any point in time, there are around four million kids who never have, and never will attend school. Of those that do attend school, roughly 30% drop out before finishing primary school.

Think about that for a moment. How would you feel if roughly a third of primary school kids in your neighbourhood were forced to drop out of education, for life? And that's exactly what is happening in Angola: kids want an education, and desperately want to stay in school as long as possible, but are forced to drop out, as they have to help their families work the land. If they didn't, they'd starve.

Eat, or learn. That's quite a harsh choice to be forced to make, especially if you're only ten.

Also, when we talk about kids attending school, it isn't what you imagine it to be. For kids living in the areas we will be targeting, school mostly means a single teacher teaching a mixed-ages, mixed-abilities group of kids - up to 80 kids at a time! - using a chalkboard, outside and exposed to the elements, with kids sat down in the dirt. Many of those kids - some as young as 7 - walk many miles, unattended, through the African bush, to get to school.

It is amazing they manage to learn anything at all! Again, imagine if that was how things were in the primary school in your neighbourhood. Would you accept that?

Once kids leave, or drop out of school, for almost all of them it means they will have absolutely no opportunity at all, for the rest of their lives, to engage with education again. It means they will be locked in that poverty cycle, and that their children will be almost guaranteed to repeat the same cycle.

Close your eyes a moment as you ponder that. If you have kids, how would you feel if eking out a living, barely surviving, doing subsistence farming, was as good as life will ever get for your kids? Those poor people in Angola love their kids just as much as you love yours, and they also want a brighter future for their kids.
